Recommended Books for Your Spiritual Journey

Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books are the foundation of ISKCON’s education. They present ancient Vaiṣṇava wisdom in a way that is accessible to thoughtful modern readers.

Where to begin

A good place to start is Bhagavad-gītā As It Is. It introduces the themes of the soul, karma, yoga, devotion, Kṛṣṇa, and the meaning of life through the dialogue between Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna at a moment of crisis and important life decision.

For beginners

Beginners may also find helpful books such as The Science of Self-Realization, Perfect Questions, Perfect Answers, and The Path of Self-Realization, as well as shorter introductory books on mantra meditation and practical spiritual life.

For deeper study

Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam offers a broad presentation of spiritual history, theology, philosophy, and the culture of devotional service centered on Kṛṣṇa and His devotees. Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta presents the life and teachings of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, who spread the chanting of the holy names.

How to read

Read slowly and thoughtfully. It is better to carefully read a small passage than many pages in haste. Ask questions, speak with devotees, and try to apply the understanding you gain in your daily life.

Books as service

From the very beginning, book distribution has been a central service in ISKCON because it allows spiritual knowledge to travel beyond the walls of the temple. One book can become the beginning of someone’s spiritual life.
